Snow Fun (and Safety!) in Hampton Roads
It looks like it is almost time for our annual snow storm here in Hampton Roads. While opinions vary widely about this upcoming snow forecast, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy it and ways to make sure you stay safe!
1. Stay off the roads (if you can.)
Not everyone has this option, but especially during and right after the snow falls, make sure you use common sense about going out. It can take a couple of days for plows and salt trucks to make roads driveable, and sometimes, it’s just better and safer to stay home and build a snowman or a blanket fort.
2. Embrace the down time.
If you are fortunate enough to be able to stay home, enjoy the time! Play with your kids, binge watch that show everyone is talking about, take a nap, or read. Whatever has been sitting on the back burner that you haven’t had time to do, take the opportunity to enjoy it.
3. Get a great workout.
After the snow has fallen, get some cardio in with shoveling or helping clear sidewalks for others around you. If you are healthy enough to exercise, shoveling snow will beat a gym workout any day!
4. Beware of ice!
Snow is beautiful, but it does a great job of covering up its evil twin sister: ice. Be extra careful when walking around or clearing areas, especially in the late evening or early morning when snow melt can refreeze at ground level. The soil temperature right now is warmer than the air, and this is an especially important tip for the snow that is being forecasted for Hampton Roads this weekend.
5. Reach out to those who might need help.
If you have elderly neighbors or friends around you battling any illness, reach out to them before or after the snowfall to see if you can help clear a walkway or car, or assist in any other way. It doesn’t hurt to make sure they are okay with food for the duration of the storm as well. Something as simple as sending a plate of warm food next door can go a long way toward being a good neighbor.
6. Slow down!
We’ve successfully navigated the busy holiday season, so why not take a weekend to enjoy the quiet of your home in the snow? This tip also applies to driving. If you must go out, give yourself plenty of time, make sure you have your phone with you, and drive slowly. There is no need to hurry, and black ice is a real concern!
We hope everyone stays safe and warm. Big thanks to all the first responders and essential staff at places like the local hospitals who will all be doing their job to keep us safe during and after the upcoming snow.
