We love the long sunny days and the feeling like we want to take advantage of every fun thing there is to do in Hampton Roads. While the heat has been a little much lately, we can’t help but think about what we want to be doing this weekend, this upcoming week, and pretty much every day to squeeze all the fun we can get out of summer!
We realized that there are a lot of activities and things to do around Hampton Roads that we consider essential to a successful summer. Sometimes the lull of summer boredom can strike, but just take a look at these key Hampton Roads summer activities and get inspired!
1. Farmer’s Markets
We have them all over the seven cities, and they are the perfect place to get the freshest produce, local meats, seafood, or already made goods. My Active Child offers a really in depth listing of all area Farmer’s Markets. You can also find great info on area farms and food from Buy Fresh, Buy Local. Check them out at their links and make sure to put a stop on the local market on your list of things to do!
2. The beach!
Whether you enjoy the bay or the ocean, there are a million options for putting your toes in the sand. Every Hampton Roads local needs to take at least one opportunity to slather on the sunscreen and soak up some rays. If you’re not the kind that likes to sit still, consider trying surfing, a stand-up paddleboard, or even hit up the new fitness park at the Oceanfront. We’re big fans of Little Island Park- it has easy to access restrooms and a fishing pier as well as a beautiful expanse of the lovely ocean right at the end of Sandbridge.
3. Bergey’s in Chesapeake
Bergey’s Dairy used to be the place to go to see a working dairy farm and all the cute critters that inhabited it. And they had ice cream that was so fresh and delicious. It was worth it alone. Restructured slightly, Bergey’s now exists as a store on the same farm. There are still some animals to watch and explore, but the store has more than ice cream, namely some incredible handmade goods. Called Bergey’s Breadbasket, you can indulge in fresh homemade pies, cinnamon rolls, or even sandwiches and still say hi to the goats and chickens. Don’t miss it!
4. The Aquarium (and Adventure Park)
There may be no nicer place to seek a little relief from the summer sun than exploring the beautiful Virginia Aquarium. Interact with animals and explore the watery world around us as well as all that inhabit it. So much to learn, so many cute (and not so cute) animals to see, and some great opportunities to gain new knowledge and respect for the waterways we are surrounded by. If you’re up to it, make sure to check out the Adventure Park, a ropes and challenge course for the explorer in all of us.
5. Doumar’s in Norfolk
If you want to step back in time for a bit, head over to Doumar’s. This landmark restaurant has car-hop service and indoor seating and has been serving great food and amazing ice cream treats (and cones) for over 100 years. The barbecue is classic, but we love the grilled cheese with bacon and tomato. No visit to Doumar’s is complete without a freshly made ice cream cone or shake.
