The coffeehouses of Norfolk should take heed: there’s another bean grinder in town.
Coaster Coffee opened last November, at 8418 Tidewater Drive, close to the Ocean View area. Nestled in across the street from Northside Park, it may end up being the perfect place for you and your children as summer winds down: after an afternoon on the playground or the skateboard park, the whole family can cool off and relax with a drink and a snack from Coaster Coffee. They offer special daily brews, featured teas and the barista’s drink of the week, which you can track on their Facebook page. For today, their special brews were Coaster Rican, Tanzanian Peaberry and Snickaroo. The featured tea was raspberry.
Their menu offers great artisan coffees, teas and pastries, and with vegan and gluten-free options as well. Coaster Coffee also caters, perfect for the next time your office has a meeting where everyone will need a little help sitting through it.
For all of you early birds, Coaster Coffee’s hours are Monday-Friday, 5:30 AM-8 PM; Saturday is 7 AM-8 PM, and closed on Sundays. There’s plenty of parking but take heed: Coaster Coffee doesn’t have a drive-through. If you’re in a rush, you’ll have to go in to order your cuppa joe.
Unlike other shops, Coaster Coffee isn’t looking to just serve up cups of coffee to the masses. They’re in it for more, operating as a non-profit business. All of their profits go back into the community by feeding the hungry, building community gardens, teaching kids the arts, and helping people who are out of work secure employment.
Their coffee shop is also an answer to the increasing demand for community meeting places in the Ocean View area. People of all ages, races, beliefs and socio-economic standing are welcome.
And if you’re a gardener, looking for fertilizer for your plants, keep your eyes open. Coaster Coffee repurposes their used grounds by bagging them and offering them for free for garden- and plant-use. Look for the gold bags by the front door.
