Trying to pick a handful of locally owned restaurants to showcase in Virginia Beach is a daunting task. We asked around and ended up with a really long list, and for no particular reason (other than loving these places) we made a short list of five restaurants you shouldn’t miss in VB. There are so much more, we might have to revisit Virginia Beach food hot spots sooner than later, but it’s a start!

When it comes to eating out in Hampton Roads, a lot of the focus is on Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Both cities are chock full of great places to eat, but today we want to touch on the food scene in Portsmouth, specifically the locally owned and operated.

Portsmouth is one of our favorite cities for eating out in Hampton Roads, but we don’t think it gets the attention it deserves. Make sure to take a look at this round-up of five of our favorites.

1. The Bier Garden: 438 High Street, Portsmouth, VA 23704

The Osfolk family have been running this German restaurant in Old Town for over 18 years. Explore the stellar (and gigantic) beer list or just enjoy their fresh, homemade Bavarian food. Don’t miss any opportunity you get this summer to dine on

Small Business Spotlight has been a great way for us to share some of the local businesses we come across in Hampton Roads. Once a month, we talk about one locally owned business and share their story.

Recently, while facing the classic dinner indecision debate while trying to figure out where to eat, I thought it might be nice to have a list to look at with some ideas. It always seems that you never think of a place you want to try when hunger strikes.

We chose five local restaurants to share with the hope that you’ll remember the next time your dinner indecision debate occurs. This month we’re looking at places in Chesapeake. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and it’s slightly biased as well. These are all places adored by TREG

Ddeb’s A Taste of Home in Chesapeake, VA has been offering delicious food in the Great Bridge area for over a year. Ddeb is a nickname owner Debbie Toth acquired over the years, and she puts her heart, soul, and years of hospitality experience into her restaurant as well as her name.

Located on Old Drive in the center of Great Bridge, going to Ddeb’s feels like stepping into a favorite small town eatery of the past with the best food of today. The vintage home the restaurant is located in is the perfect setting for such a friendly, warm dining experience. While Debbie’s food is better than any food I ever had growing up (sorry mom!), Ddeb’s doesn’t just offer a taste of home, it feels like home as well.

On a recent visit, we tried the

Aaron McLellan grew up in Boston. With a seamstress for a mom, learning to sew was a part of life. He came to Hampton Roads to attend college at Christopher Newport University and entered the job force in corporate management. A work transfer from Newport News to Virginia Beach placed Aaron close to the water and the beach culture he was interested in.

You could say it was the ocean that actually sparked the idea for North End Bag Co. Looking for a bag to use on a surfing trip, Aaron needed a heavy-duty sling bag that could hold up to adventuring. The “Wayward Son” bag was born in it’s initial form, and stood up well to steep crags while hiking to remote surf spots, as well as allowing him two free hands to balance and carry a board.

This week, City Deli in Chesapeake celebrates 25 years of great food and growth. What started as a business venture for owner Elayne, her mother, and a dear friend and cook named Frieda, has become a busy restaurant that serves many and employs 10. A landmark of Great Bridge, City Deli serves up delicious food and small town hospitality. The next few days will be spent celebrating Elayne’s favorite part of the job, the customers she wants to thank for 25 years of business.

City Deli has thrived in Great Bridge because of the quality of the food they create and the service they provide their customers. The restaurant itself has seen upgrades over the years including renovations a couple of years ago that brought with it an ABC license and free
