Local bookworms might know the best-kept literary secret in Norfolk is the Book Exchange at Wards Corner. It’s been a winner in the bookstore, “New or Used,” category in “The Best of Hampton Roads,” contest for 10 years.

For any avid reader, it’s easy to accumulate books. What do you do with them after they’ve been read? Do they sit on a bookshelf somewhere while you admire them as they gather dust? The Book Exchange makes it easy to deal with your ever-growing collection of books by allowing you to trade them in for store credit.

When items come in to be traded, the store’s staff gives trade credit for the items they accept, which includes books, DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs, vinyl records, music cassette tapes, and audiobooks. What the store takes

Winter is upon us! With cooler temperatures come concerns about weather-related damages to vacant rental properties. Landlords and property managers must stay ahead of the game by ensuring appropriate actions are taken before freezing temperatures occur.  Otherwise, the cost of repairs from water damage and broken pipes can be substantial. Costs like these may not be covered by insurance.

It’s advisable to have the utilities on as a first step to ensure interior temps are kept at reasonable levels. You want your new home to really feel like your home, inside and out. Even though this is your chance to personalize your home, you don’t want to go overboard with trendy details. Trends can change quickly and you don’t want your new home to look dated.

“Just like fashion, housing trends change so quickly. They were all the rage at the time, but they're not exactly selling points today.”

If you’re just not sure about a particular detail, make it a point, before ground is broken, to talk to your builder. You’ll get the right information if a trend

When children are small, Christmas tends to be more magical for them than it is once they're grown. Keep that holiday magic going with your little ones on Christmas Eve, by tracking Santa’s flight around the world. And if you time it right, you can even use it as a way to get the kiddos to bed promptly!

The Official NORAD Santa Tracker is an annual Christmas-themed entertainment program, which has existed since 1955, with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Every year on Christmas Eve, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he leaves the North Pole on Christmas Eve and delivers gifts in every time zone, to children around the world. You can use it to listen to Christmas carols, check your local weather or check the weather at the North Pole.

Home warranties are common in today’s real estate market. They provide the means for homeowners and buyers to insulate themselves from unexpected maintenance expenses and reduce outlays for repair or replacement of covered items in the home.

Warranties can also be a useful in the marketing properties with older systems, by removing some of the concern about equipment failure from the decision-making process.  Home warranties on owner-occupied properties can make a lot of sense, provided the owners understand the limitations of the coverage and are willing to be flexible regarding the speed of responses and vendor assignments.

Warranties on rental properties have also become popular with landlords, viewing them as a way to control costs for major

Having your next home built for you can be kind of a, “Which came first: the chicken or the egg,” kind of scenario. What should you do first: pick your new home’s design or it’s location?

An easy way to help you decide on both aspects is to consider your lifestyle and what your new home needs to have so it works for you and your family. Depending on your family’s needs and wants, there might not be a right or wrong home aspect to decide first.

Think about the last house you lived in with your family.  What was it that you loved about it, what did you hate about it and what do you wish you could take with you from it to your next home?
