Every year thousands of U.S. military join the ranks of retired veterans and are often faced with an overwhelming amount of challenges as they transition back into civilian life.

Perhaps the two greatest of those challenges are finding employment and a place to call home. They’ve fought to preserve the American dream for all of us, but now they must fight among us to pursue that dream for themselves. 

After devoting their lives to this country, veterans return home to an unwelcoming job market filled with employer biases about the military demographic. Thus the reason for this list.

East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) 2015

The Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships is a major professional and amateur event for the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA). Each year, several hundred surfers from Menehunes to masters compete for East Coast surfing titles, prizes, history and the sheer love of surfing. Mike Aston spent years travelling for work to cities like Washington D.C. and Chicago. One of the things he loved to do while visiting was find coffee shops with great food. The café culture that he enjoyed so much in those places was almost non-existent in Norfolk, his home at the time, and he saw an opportunity to add to the community.

For over four years, Cure Coffeehouse and Brasserie at 503 Botetourt Street in Downtown Norfolk has been bringing people together with amazing coffee, craft beer, and food. Mike and his business partner chose to name their place Cure for a number of reasons. The name reflects the restorative properties of good coffee, how they prepare some of their menu items, and the power of a cold beer after a long day.

Summer is a great time to explore the region we live in. Colonial Williamsburg is offering a FREE one-day ticket to all of its attractions and museums during the week of August 7-14, 2015. 

Residents of Hampton Roads (and beyond- see the full list here) are eligible for a free day pass. Simply click HERE to access the information site. Download the resident form and bring it, with proof of address, to the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center to get your same day pass. Service members are also welcome with a military ID and a piece of mail that verifies a local address.
