Many cities around the Tidewater area have already done their holiday illuminations and Christmas tree lightings, but one of the biggest is finally coming up this weekend: the Colonial Williamsburg Grand Illumination!

In 18th century colonial America, holidays were celebrated with light—everything from simple candles to grand fireworks—and Colonial Williamsburg continues that tradition in impressive style. These illuminations all officially start this weekend, so gather friends and family and venture out to enjoy the sparkle of the season!

Thanksgiving is this Thursday, and as we all know, a holiday in the middle of the week usually affects the schedules of everyday things such as mass transit and garbage/recycling collection.

Hampton Roads Transit will be altering their schedule for the holidays:

  • Thursday, November 22 (Thanksgiving Day) – Buses and The Tide will be on a Sunday schedule.
  • Friday, November 23 – Buses and The Tide will be on a Saturday schedule.

Regarding trash collection, below is a complete rundown of all local schedules so you can plan accordingly. Portsmouth and Hampton residents should pay particular attention if your normal trash pickup day is Thursday, as collection will be before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday.

Hampton Roads is launching itself fully into the holiday season with a host of city illuminations and parades this Saturday, November 17th. Take a look and see if your city is having a celebration, or if there's a parade or city lighting nearby that you don't want to miss!

2012 Illuminations

Downtown Norfolk Grand Illumination Parade - starts at 7 pm.

City of Suffolk Grand Illumination - starts at 6 pm.

Olde Towne Portsmouth Skyline Illumination - part of the Norfolk Grand Illumination. Starts at 7 pm.

Hampton's Coliseum Central Holiday Parade - starts at 9:30 am.

If your child has an annual tradition of giving his or her Christmas list to Santa at the mall and getting a picture with the jolly fellow, it's that time of year again! Santa will be visiting malls throughout the Hampton Roads area starting this weekend. So if you're thinking that your child's picture with Santa would make a great Christmas card, Santa is obliging you by being available early this year!


Below is the first day Santa will be appearing at each of our local malls:

McArthur Mall, Norfolk - 11/8

Patrick Henry Mall, Newport News - 11/9 (after 7:30 pm)
