General Information
NSA Northwest Annex is located on the border of North Carolina with about 2/3's of the land being in Virginia and the rest in North Carolina. Its central location puts the base just 40 miles from Virginia Beach, 35 miles from Norfolk and Portsmouth, and just around the corner from the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Originating in 1955, as the US Naval Radio Station, the NSA Northwest Annex served as a receiving facility for naval activities. Northwest's tenant commands consist of representation from all military services, the Coast Guard, and even military members from NATO countries.

NSA Northwest Annex offers many support services for families relocating with their service member. The local Fleet & Family Support Centers can provide information on things to do in the area, local transportation, base and city maps, and even air mattresses, tables and chairs, and pots and pans.
The FFSC also has a school liaison officer on board who can coordinate school services as well as provide assistance for those with special needs. There are many choices for both public and private education.
