One of the best things about being stationed or being transferred to Fort Monroe is the many great housing choices! You will want to evaluate all of your housing options including off base housing, renting and buying to make sure you are making the best choice for your future living. At today's low interest rates, buying a home is possible for nearly any rank. The current BAH for those stationed at Monroe ranges from $1,008 for E-1 with no dependents up to $2,424 for O-7 with dependents.
This means that whether you rent or buy, you will want to look at many neighborhoods, schools and options before making your choice.
About the Area
Fort Monroe is located in Hampton, Virginia and boasts 565 acres of land, 170 historic buildings and approximately 200 acres of natural resources. Located on the Chesapeake Bay, there are 8 miles of waterfront, 3.2 miles of beaches, 110 acres of submerged lands and 85 acres of wetlands. Though currently remaining to serve as an active military installation, Fort Monroe plans to close in September of 2011. It has become a popular historical site.

Fort Monroe offers many support services for families relocating with their service member. The local Fleet & Family Support Centers can provide information on things to do in the area, local transportation, base and city maps, and even air mattresses, tables and chairs, and pots and pans. The FFSC also has a school liaison officer on board who can coordinate school services as well as provide assistance for those with special needs. There are many choices for both public and private education.
